Market Scavenger Hunt

The Pike Place Market will be hosting several Scavenger Hunts this year. The first one is planned for January 30. Participation is free. Check in between 11 am - 4 pm and play anytime during the day.

Game description and rules can be found online at www.pikeplacemarket.org

“Around The Market in 80 Minutes” Scavenger Hunt in the Pike Place Market

Each month’s “Around The Market in 80 Minutes” search game is designed to build awareness around the Pike Place Market and its vendors. Though it is a timed event, it actually takes place all day on the last Sunday of each month (except for April, which will be held April 17). Even though the event can typically be completed in about 40 minutes, some players may wish to spend a little more time than others, even finishing in more than 80 minutes in some cases. Look for the check-in tent on the street under the Market clock. Check in available 11 am - 4 pm (play anytime during those hours).

At the start of game, players will receive a Pike Place Market Passport with a custom 5-digit Passport Number on its cover, and the same number printed on the answer sheet inside. Also inside will be the Rules. When the Passport is initially provided to each player it will be time-stamped, and upon return of the Passport it will be time-stamped again.

New Year's Eve Tour

We are offering one tour on New Year's Eve at 7:00pm. Christian and I will both be there for the tour. The Market is a great place to celebrate. People gather under the clock for the countdown at midnight. We will have a few prizes at the end of the tour to celebrate.

If you are interested in making a full night of it in the Market for New Years there are many special events to take part in. IL Bistro has a a four-course prix-fixe menu at $85, the Market Theater has a late night Theatersports event, and many other restaurants are planning special meals. My favorite is Chez Shea for New Years. When I worked there years ago they used to have a table open on the haunted second floor (normally storage) in honor of the ghost that occupies the restaurant. Whatever you end up doing in the Pike Place Market that night, it is sure to be a night to remember, just end up on Pike Place and below the clock for the countdown. I will be there and I will be toasting the new year. Thank goodness this year is past and a new beginning is just around the corner. Celebrate with us even if you aren't on a tour, stop by the office and toast this new year. We are very excited for it!

Starvation Heights to be made into a film

It has been announced that the producer of the Twilight series will produce a film based on Starvation Heights and the story of Dr. Linda Hazzard. We have been waiting for this announcement and are very excited. Congratulations to the author, Gregg Olsen!

The story of Dr. Linda Hazzard is a horrific tale of murder. She was a starvation specialist in the early 1900s in Washington State. She is listed as a serial killer in many books. We share her story on our ghost tour because of her association with the Butterworth mortuary. Some people believe the ghosts of her patients are still in the building.

This is very exciting news! Read the press release below:

Eric Thompson's Vigilante Entertainment and Gregg Olsen are pleased to announce that Vigilante has optioned New York Times bestselling author Olsen's true crime book, STARVATION HEIGHTS for a feature film.

STARVATION HEIGHTS is the nonfiction account of so-called fasting specialist Linda Burfield Hazzard who operated a sanitarium near Seattle a century ago. Dr. Hazzard's fiendish methods cost at least 40 people their lives as she and her husband held them captive in a remote location across Puget Sound.

Thompson, who formerly ran the Maverick Films genre label Maverick Red, will produce with Mark Morgan and Michael Becker of Imprint Entertainment.Morgan produced THE STEPFATHER, the TWILIGHT series for Summit as well as PERCY JACKSON AND THE LIGHTNING THIEF for Sony. Thompson is now in post production on the independent horror film RITES OF SPRING, directed by Padraig Reynolds.
The script will be co-written by Reynolds and Thompson. Reynolds is repped by John Norris at Artist and Directors Cooperative.

"I've long been fascinated by the haunting, gothic horror story  presented in STARVATION HEIGHTS as a woman doctor uses weight loss  to control her patients to build her own personal fortune. It's a mirror for modern day society." Thompson said.

Olsen is the author of eight true crime books as well as four novels. He lives in Olalla, Washington, the town where the doctor plied her trade. "The trick to a storyline that occurred a century ago is finding a way to make it relevant to a contemporary audience. Eric has come up with a brilliant concept for STARVATION HEIGHTS that will resonate, shock, and thrill today's filmgoers." Olsen said.

Starvation Heights

In 1911 two wealthy British heiresses came to a sanitarium near Seattle to undergo the revolutionary fasting treatment of Linda Burfield Hazzard. It was supposed to be a holiday for the two sisters. But within a month of arriving at what the locals called Starvation Heights, the women were emaciated.
